Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Girl Scouts of Western Ohio canceled summer camp in 2020. However, we still wanted to offer girls across western Ohio an opportunity to learn outdoor skills and participate in Girl Scouts over the summer, and thanks to the camp website I had built the year before, we knew we had the technology to do it.
I collaborated with the outdoor program team and GE Aviation to host nine weeks of summer camp on the camp website and a private Facebook Group for Girl Scout members. We posted activities twice per day Monday through Friday based on a particular theme for the week. Each week featured outdoor skill building, crafts, nature exploration, campfire recipes, and STEM experiments taught by engineers at GE Aviation.
I trained the outdoor program staff and GE Aviation engineers on video best practices, as well as how to upload and schedule videos to Facebook and YouTube. Once the videos went live on Facebook, I transferred them to the camp website so girls without Facebook access could still participate.
By the end of the summer, we had more than 1,800 Girl Scout members from across the country in the Facebook Group—not just our own members from western Ohio. We celebrated a successful virtual summer camp with a Camporee the final day of camp, where families could camp in their own backyards and participate in activities throughout the evening.
